Electric Light Orchestra fans choose their favourite deep cuts – and one ‘insane performance’ stands out

Electric Light Orchestra fans are choosing their favourite deep cuts from the band, and an “insane performance” was chosen as a standout moment.

The Jeff Lynne-fronted group may be best known for hits like Mr. Blue Sky, Evil Woman, and Don’t Bring Me Down, but some of their lesser-known songs have been given a chance in the spotlight. A Reddit thread on the r/ELO subreddit saw dedicated listeners weigh up which moments from Lynne and the band were their very best. One of the highest-rated comments on the thread points to a lesser-listened Out of the Blue rip, Jungle. One reply to the suggestion reads: “Jungle was the song I immediately thought of.

“My boyfriend heard it and said it was the worst song from them. I’m re-thinking if I should even be with him. Don’t hate on my ELO!” Another user added: “Amazing song!” A third wrote: “Hell yes.” Not all the attention was on Jungle, with the “insane performance” Lynne gives on a Secret Messages track tipped as one of the band’s all-time greatest moments.

The user wrote: “Endless Lies. Insane vocal performance from Jeff.” Another replied: “Very Roy Orbison on that one.” A third agreed, adding: “Exactly. I’ve always said it sounds just like Roy Orbison singing the line Endless Lies.”

Another track from the band, which only charted in Iceland, has been considered the peak of the ELO deep cuts. Their Beach Boys-sounding song was lauded by fans. One wrote: “Latitude 88 North. I have a hard time determining what are and aren’t deep cuts at this point because I feel like most of my favourite ELO songs are deep cuts but here’s one that wasn’t even released so I am sure it’s a deep cut.”

Point of No Return, another initially unreleased song from the band, was also tipped as one of their best deep cuts. A fan wrote: “I was waiting to see this one. Point of No Return is so good and way too unknown and underrated. It’s one of my absolute favourites and it deserves more attention.”

Several songs from Secret Messages and its follow-up, Balance of Power, were mentioned by fans. One user wrote: “Calling America may be the most streamed song on Balance of Power, but no one talks about it and it is one of their best. All Over the World is amazing as well. Both may be hits but I don’t see people talking about them and they are amazing.”

Another suggested Out of the Blue cut Standin’ in the Rain did not receive as much love as it should. They wrote: “Standin’ in the Rain. Definitely not as many people talking about it as I think should.

“It’s if you made a song based on the word ‘dramatic.’ It’s also like the Anti-Mr. Blue Sky which is my favourite song with Standin’ in the Rain taking second place. It’s a great song to get hyped for too.”
