Neil Young has confirmed his new album is “finished” and could release in April, months before his Glastonbury set.
The Harvest and Tonight’s the Night songwriter shared an update to his website, the Neil Young Archives, and confirmed the as-yet-titled album has been finished. Young wrote the material for his newest album in November and December and appears to have recorded it last month. It is now being mastered and printed on vinyl and CD. An update from the songwriter confirmed he was now working on last-minute additions, such as lyric sheets, and hopes to get them in time for the release. Lead single Big Change released earlier this year, with his blistering new song the first sign of fresh album material since 2022’s World Record.
He wrote: “Hi everyone. I just finished my new album with Lou Adler and John Hanlon. It is in mastering now to make the vinyl, CD and digital copies. I am very happy and relieved to have this done in the short time it took. The album art has been completed and handed in with Jenice Heo. I am working on the lyric sheet now, hoping to hand-write the words and get them in, in time…
“It is a happy feeling I have today, knowing I have made an album I think people will enjoy. I hope it’s out in April. That would be pretty fast. Playing with the Chrome Hearts was a joy as we recorded song after song at Shangrila in Malibu.
“I wrote these songs in November and December. They feel fresh to me and I am very happy to have this all ready for you. It won’t be long now and it will be great to have new songs to play on the road this summer in Europe, the US and Canada. We are looking forward to that!”
An announcement of new material from Young comes as he praised Bob Dylan biopic, A Complete Unknown. A Complete Unknown released on Christmas Day in the US and is set for a January 17 release in the UK.
He wrote: “I love Bob Dylan and his music. Always have. He’s a great artist. Once he was on my bus and I didn’t recognise him and threw him off but that’s another story. This movie is a great tribute to his life and music. I think if you love Bob’s music you should see this great movie. I loved it.”
Young’s praise for the film comes as Chalamet is hotly tipped for an Academy Award nomination for his performance as the Mr. Tambourine Man and Idiot Wind songwriter. He was nominated for a Golden Globe for his performance, though lost to Adrien Brody for his work in The Brutalist.
