The Beatles fans congratulate Paul McCartney on ‘most successful albums’ achievement – but say award looks “ugly”

Fans of The Beatles have congratulated Paul McCartney on his “most successful albums” achievement – but say the award looks ugly.

Praise was heaped on the Wings frontman who was seen pictured with the massive glass poster from the Official Charts team. The award reads: “The UK’s most successful albums act of all time. 22 Number 1 albums (The Beatles/Wings/Paul McCartney). Most weeks at Number 1 on the Official Albums Chart of any artist.” While it may be quite the achievement for the Let it Be hitmaker, fans were left doubled over at the size of the award handed to The Beatles’ bass player.

While many fans congratulated him on the award, a few were left pointing out it was quite a hefty plaque to hand over to McCartney. One user of The Beatles’ subreddit wrote: “What do they expect him to do with that thing? It’s so ugly and big and ugly. Like Paul’s gonna hang that up.”

According to the original poster, McCartney hangs up his awards on the office wall at MPL Communications in Soho Square. Another user joked: “If he were to hand up every single award he’s ever won, I don’t think the wall would support that weight anymore lol.”

The picture comes from a DLM Display post on Instagram. DLM Display is the official supplier of BRIT Certified Gold, Silver and Platinum awards in the record industry. McCartney’s last number one album in the UK, McCartney III, released in 2020.

The album was lauded by critics at the time of its release, with it being the third in the McCartney trilogy. McCartney, the self-titled solo debut, was released shortly after the break-up of The Beatles while McCartney II, which also went to number one in the UK, released in 1980.

McCartney II marked the first solo album from the Live and Let Die songwriter following the end of Wings. Following the release of Back to the Egg, interest in the Wings project died down and, following their final tour in the late 1970s, they disbanded. They played their final show on December 29, 1979, where Back to the Egg tracks like Arrow Through Me and Getting Closer were played.

The show was part of a Concerts for the People of Kampuchea show. It also marks the last time Arrow Through Me was played live by McCartney. Wings also reached number one with McCartney for albums Band on the Run and Venus and Mars.
