Bob Dylan fans point to one performance in particular that cements him as the ‘greatest of all time’

A particular performance from Bob Dylan has left fans calling him the “greatest of all time”.

A viral post to Twitter saw Dylan performing Blood on the Tracks song Idiot Wind at Hughes Stadium, Colorado, for the Hard Rain concert film. Fans have since suggested this performance is what cements him as the “greatest of all time” as they heap praise onto the legendary gig. Sharing a clip of Dylan’s Hard Rain concert film, users are complimenting Dylan’s performance and say his live versions are well worth seeking out.

One user wrote: “Bob Dylan and subsequently The Band are the only artists where I actively seek out live performances instead of the studio versions. Their energy is just incredible on stage.” Another seasoned fan added: “This is the best version of Bob Dylan in my opinion and I’ve seen all of them.”

Plenty of praise was found for the gig which the clip is from, with another user suggesting Shelter from the Storm is of an equal quality to this Idiot Wind performance. They wrote: “Shelter from the Storm from the same gig is also outstanding.” A few fans were seen calling on a Bootleg Series release of Idiot Wind and the Hard Rain live performances.

One user quote-tweeted the video and wrote: “Without exaggeration, greatest of all time.” Plenty of users agreed in the replies, with one adding: “Agreed. The Master. Saw him many times over the decades. Most notably with Rolling Thunder Review in Gainesville FL. With Joan Baez, Mick Ronson. Epic.”

Dylan’s Hard Rain live album was recorded at Hughes Stadium, Colorado and in Forth Worth, Texas. Part of the recording was featured as a one-hour NBC special while four songs are from a performance a week prior in Texas. The album was recorded on the second leg of the legendary Rolling Thunder Revue shows and predominantly features Blood on the Tracks songs.

Lay Lady Lay from Nashville Skyline and One Too Many Mornings from The Times They Are A-Changin’ are also featured on the nine-track album, with Joan Baez and T Bone Burnett also featuring. Fans still feel moved by the album today, with one writing: “This is probably my fave Dylan live album, the version of Lay Lady Lay on this is insane.” Another wrote of the Idiot Wind performance: “A revelation. One of the best performances of one of my favourite songs.”
