Neil Young fans have named the songs from his discography they wish “got more love”.

The legendary songwriter is set to headline Glastonbury Festival later this year, and fans are now sifting through his backlog of work and finding some hidden gems. Those deep cuts were shared to a Neil Young Reddit group, where users focused on the 1990s efforts put out by Young. A post to the forum asked: “A song you wish got more love?” Young is not without incredible works with Harvest, After the Gold Rush and On the Beach to name a few from his 1970s heyday.

But later efforts from the songwriter, particularly from the album Silver & Gold, which was released in 2000, were praised by his dedicated fans. The original poster writes: “One word: Slowpoke. Possibly my favourite post-1974 CSNY song ever released. Neil fucking Young man.”

Another user, who has the top comment on the post so far, suggested Prime of Life as another deep cut which does not get as much of a look in as Young’s more established songs. The Young and Crazy Horse collaboration can be heard on his 1994 album, Sleeping with Angels. Some agreed with the suggestion, with one user writing: “I was going to suggest Change Your Mind, but this works as well.”

Sleeping with Angels featured in a few more comments left by fans of the veteran songwriter, with both Prime of Life and Change Your Mind tipped as underrated. A third added: “Change Your Mind is a fantastic song.”

Other fans pointed to Young’s 1989 album, Freedom, and cited both Too Far Gone and Crime in the City as underrated efforts from the songwriter. One user wrote: “Too Far Gone. I don’t have a specific reason, and I can see why it’s not well recognised, I just love it for some reason.”

It comes as seasoned Young fans are helping those who may not be as well-versed in the songwriter’s backlog ahead of his Pyramid Stage performance at Glasto.

A post to the Neil Young subreddit reads: “Hi. As you will all know Neil’s headlining Glasto this year but I literally don’t have a clue to start with his music. It’s my first Glasto and I don’t wanna write the guy off for myself before giving his stuff a shot. I’m 20 so I’ve never heard of him till rumours of him at Glasto started. He’s just before my time that’s all. Any recommendations on where to start would be good. Thanks for any help.”

Fans of Young were quick to recommend some of his finest albums, but the top comment suggested diving into a now dated compilation album. They suggested: “I think Decade would be a pretty good place to start, it’s an older compilation but will give you a general taste for his music. For an indication of what he’s like as a live act, try Weld or Way Down In The Rust Bucket.”
