The Dandy Warhols – Danzig With Myself Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Not every band can whip Frank Black of Pixies into shape, but The Dany Warhols are not just any band. Their feverish rise and subsequent slump captured the world and rattled the brains of those who enjoyed seeing them at their peak. While they may be a long way away from The Dandy Warhols Come to Town, their single Danzig With Myself has them back in form and thoroughly on the road to Rockmaker after a lacklustre release with The Summer of Hate. Atone for the absurdities of this release though and focus in on their collaborative efforts. Slash is just around the corner, as is the release of their first album in five years. Let us hope it carries itself with the same qualities as Danzig With Myself.

Emotionless electronics create this bed of discomfort for The Dandy Warhols and Frank Black to leap from, the latter crushed under the boot of instrumental bliss and a croaking, muffled clang to his voice. Danzig With Myself is more an exploration into where The Dandy Warhols can divert attention, their whining guitar work takes precedence over Black – whose vocal effort brings moody tones and a sense of complete uselessness to the world. Is there any point in survival in a state of insidious surroundings? It is hard to feel much other than fear in times like this. The Dandy Warhols are not saying the world is against you and everyone in it but suggesting it. There is uniformity and camaraderie in the fear. Rightly so – it is what so many need now.

But beyond their frazzled appearance and their low-texture image with the Microsoft Paint hatched job of a single cover, there is little more than a feeling to Danzig With Myself. Its muttered occurrences from Black pair well with what should be a hopeful return to form for The Dandy Warhols though there is much work to be done. Rockmaker has yet to offer a firm, steady single. Slash is working overtime to make something of interest with the lifeless and uninteresting music videos, seeped in artificial intelligence. But Danzig With Myself fades from the mind immediately, its call to arms not as monumental as the pairing, on paper, which sounds magnificent. Instrumental glories are short and bittersweet here.

At least they are present. We live in times where your brain can melt into this song or that – and for those whose sleep depravity is tied to the hours they work – it is hard not to autocorrect Danzig with dancing, which elicits thoughts of Billy Idol. Enlisting Black for the spoken word misery, the harsh rebuttal to the world around him, as he strikes down the idiots, is harder to swallow when he admits he has no questions or answers. At a time when the public must prepare to question and hold their guard, it is strikingly different, but not accurate, of The Dandy Warhols to say “lower these defences”. Everyone is out to get you, but so be it. A macabre song which is gloomy in its system for the sake of it.
