Caroline Polachek – Welcome to My Island Review

Freestyling her way toward a third album, Caroline Polachek presents Welcome to My Island as a testament to her vocal range. Utilising the fast and free stylings of the synthpop genre and pairing those up with loose lyrics of a certain intensity, Polachek goes from strength to strength with another tease of her upcoming album. Welcome to My Island is as uplifting as the new wave genre gets, and this latest piece is no exception to those well-weathered, broader genre storms. Polachek holds a great voice though, represented well throughout this rhythmic piece that feels aeons away from the earlier album works so far released. There is a growth of the form and then there is this, an excellent composition that pushes away from the art pop momentum of Pang.

Never quite rejecting that foundation, Welcome to My Island has a slipping grasp of genres of old, but it maintains some exceptional and very real, monumental lyrics. It is as uplifting as it is blunt with its honesty and fixation in the latter stages of the track. There is a story-like progression, an introduction to the island Polachek appears to be stranded on and the desire that crops up in her choruses. There is a message of messiness juxtaposed with the clarity and crisp mixing on display. Remarkable, really. Polachek navigates grand rises and falls to experiment and show off not just her vocal range but her writing talents.

There is a necessary, anthemic feeling underlying all of this, though. It feels only natural that Desire, I Want to Turn Into You holds one or two of those. Her upcoming album would likely be lost without them. Welcome to My Island feels like an opener, from its title all the way through to the structure. A rare beast of a track that holds itself as one with constant replay value. It has the earworm qualities that only the best can rely on, yet marks a consistency for Polachek as the singer pushes herself to the next level. Stunning that mixture of light bops and darker lyrical enticements may be, it is up to Polachek to make sure the rest of her album is up to that task, or at the very least, in a similar place of quality. Welcome to My Island sets the bar incredibly high.

Keep an eye on the work of producer Dan Nigro, whose cluttered credits list includes production work for the likes of Black Country, New Road, Olivia Rodrigo and the earlier works of Polachek. Quite a remarkable backlog of talent to be working with, and Polachek’s latest track, Welcome to My Island is a vibrant and strongly worked track that marks a sincere and constant improvement over singles of old. It is not a change in message or pace that does it for Polachek but a change in genre. That is the key to unlocking Polachek’s latest piece, and what a single it is. Powerful vocal ranges explored, differing musical tones innovated and stretched to their limit. It is as exciting as it is comfortable, a rare balance struck with a natural charm by Polachek here.
