Pink Floyd fans have plenty to be excited about following the band’s lucrative rights sale to Sony Music.
The deal, which is believed to have been valued at $400million, quickly led to remastered releases of sought-after performances. Pink Floyd‘s Pompeii – MCMLXXII was hailed by fans, as was the fiftieth anniversary re-release of Wish You Were Here. Both releases put plenty of stock in Sony as a company who were putting real care into the Pink Floyd projects, and fans are hopeful this stretch of quality continues. Taking to the r/PinkFloyd subreddit, listeners believe the next bootleg to receive a remaster will be the Montreux 1970 show.
The band’s show on the Atom Heart Mother tour has become a legendary bootleg for Pink Floyd fans. The David Gilmour and Roger Waters-featuring band performed the likes of Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun, More Blues, and Cymbaline during the eleven-song set on November 21, 1970.
A post to the fan forum reads: “If you could have one pre-1974 concert get an official release, which would it be? Assuming it gets the full Steven Wilson treatment the 1975 bootleg got last year, which show would you pick? I say pre-1974, as I’m sure everyone will pick Oakland 1977 otherwise. My pick is Montreux 1970, which I’m sure is probably the obvious answer.”
While some fans called for both of the Montreux 1970 shows to receive a remastering treatment, others went further afield with their choices and say the likes of Zurich 1972, Brighton Dome 1972, and the Radio City Music Hall gig from 1973 are hopefully contenders for a future remastering.
One person wrote: “The Radio City Music Hall gig in 1973 that started after midnight, and I’ve heard rumours that members of the Dead and Todd Rundgren were in the audience.”
Another added: “Zurich ’72. Amazing set list. Amazing performance. The Dark Side of the Moon when it was fresh, but with the rough edges taken off. Possibly the best One of These Days and Careful with That Axe, Eugene from that era. Plus Childhood’s End. And Echoes.”
A third wrote: “Brighton Dome 1972 since we know two shows got filmed, give it to me.” Another listener agreed with the call to remaster the Brighton Dome show, saying it would be the most psychedelic experienc from the band since Syd Barrett left.
They shared: “The Dome 1972. Imagine that equipment breakdown/explosion remixed in full Dolby Surround? Would be the most psychedelic show since the Syd era.”
Whether new remasters are in the works is yet to be seen but Pink Floyd fans were thrilled with the albums and remasters released post-Sony takeover. A deal was struck between Pink Floyd and Sony back in 2024, which saw the band sell the rights to their name, likeness, and back catalogue.
