Bob Dylan has enlisted yet another new guitarist for his Never-Ending Tour, and attendees say he made all the difference. Rough and Rowdy Ways songs dominated the set in Cincinnati last night, which were given some “energetic” twists according to those who were at the gig. New guitarist Jad Tariq has been drafted in following the departure of longstanding instrumentalists Bob Britt and Doug Lancio. Joel Paterson and Julian Lage have also been on hand to play with Dylan.
But Tariq was added to the show last night (July 10) for a gig at the PNC Pavilion. The show featured songs from Time Out of Mind, Oh Mercy, and Rough and Rowdy Ways. Dylan and the band were praised for a “great show” that added major twists to Dylan’s most recent studio material. Lage was not featured on the show tonight, replaced by Tariq. The new instrumentalist received plenty of praise from fans for what he gave to the 16-song set.

Fans have since hailed the “bouncy and energetic” adaptations made to Rough and Rowdy Ways material. One person wrote on the Bob Dylan subreddit: “Bob & Co. did it again! Great setlist – bouncy and energetic adaptations of the Rough and Rowdy Ways tracks, the heavy rain and pure silence of the crowd moment was unforgettable, and that I Shall Be released finale, absolute perfection.”
Another added: “Great show from row five. So cool to see a new guitarist debut. When Bob brought out the harp, he had this smile and look like, ‘I can’t believe I’m playing guitar in Bob Dylan’s band.’ Tony Garnier hung out and watched John Doe’s set, then talked to some fans. Awesome night.”
A third shared: “I saw him [Dylan] smile at least six times and do a little wiggle dance twice during the guitar solos from third row right pit. We were definitely blessed with a good mood Bob, tonight!”
In a separate thread, guitarist Jad Tariq was hailed as doing “quite well” on his debut show with Dylan. A fan shared: “He did quite well. Kind of hung back and played rhythm, but also had a few nice solos. He was just a few feet from Tony, who said maybe one or two things to him. Bob didn’t shoot him any glares. When Bob brought out the harp for the first time, he had this look on his face like, ‘Is this really happening?'”
