Fans of the legendary rock band Pink Floyd believe the group “overdid it” with their acclaimed album, The Dark Side of the Moon.
While the Roger Waters-penned album features David Gilmour, Nick Mason, and Richard Wright in a career-best spot, some listeners believe it’s just too much to deal with. A post to the r/PinkFloyd subreddit had one fan suggest the band had gone too far with their 1973 classic. The fan wrote: “Did anyone else feel like they ‘overdid it’ with The Dark Side of the Moon a bit? I’ll always love it and I’ll always consider it to be a sublime masterpiece and an absolute pinnacle of recorded music. However I don’t think I’ve had the urge to actually play it for about 10 years now.
“I just listened to it that many times in the past that I just almost know it too well now. Like it has nothing to reveal to me anymore. I naturally occasionally hear songs from it here and there and it just kind of feels like I’m going through the motions with it. It doesn’t profoundly impact me in the way it once did. Has anyone else suffered from this?”
Other fans were confused by the criticism levelled at The Dark Side of the Moon. One person replied: “You’ve got to be crazy.” Another added: “I still listen to it at least once a week.”
Some disagreed with those who could not believe The Dark Side of the Moon had become overplayed. One fan sympathised with the original poster, suggesting they too had worn the grooves of Pink Floyd’s masterpiece over the years. They wrote: “Yes and no. I also overdid Pink Floyd’s ’70s catalogue as a teenager, and they’re not really frequent listens for me anymore. However, when I do listen to them, I’m instantly reminded why they’re so good.”
Another added: “I’m in the same boat. I’ve listened to Piper at the Gates of Dawn and the big five so many times for 30 years that I hardly listen anymore. If you looked at my top artists I’ve listened to the last five years, I’m not sure how far down you’d have to go to find Pink Floyd, but they are still my favourite band.”
A third shared: “Yeah I think this describes me pretty well, too. Still a big Pink Floyd fan, and if asked I think I’d name them as my favorite band, but I genuinely just don’t listen to them much at all anymore.”
Fans appeared to be suffering from burnout with their favourite band, while others said The Wall had also suffered from the same treatment as The Dark Side of the Moon. A fan shared: “I feel that about The Wall. I can’t remember the last time I listened to it all the way through.”
Another added: “Listening to The Dark Side of the Moon is like watching Citizen Kane. It’s almost required media consumption, and if you discover it on your own, the first experience is magical. But it’s very easy to get overhyped from people talking it up, and when that happens, you might get a little disappointed.”
