Paul McCartney and Wings’ Back to the Egg will ‘receive 2027 remaster’: insider

The final album of the Paul McCartney-fronted band, Wings, will receive an archive collection remaster release next year, an insider has claimed.

Former drummer Steve Holley has claimed a remastering of Back to the Egg is in the works and will be released in 2027. The claim was made by Holley, who made his sole appearance with Wings on their last album. The album, which features songs like Arrow Through Me and Old Siam, Sir, has not yet received a remastering, but one is reportedly in the works. Members of the Paul McCartney fan page on Facebook had met with Holley last night (June 8), where he claimed a remastering of Back to the Egg would be released next year.

Back to the Egg has not yet received a remastering despite winning a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for the Rockestra Theme. McCartney has not spoken about the album publicly all that often, with Back to the Egg releasing around the end of Wings’ lifespan. A drug arrest in Japan for McCartney back in 1981 would effectively end the band, with the Band on the Run hitmaker opting for solo releases ever since.

Despite Back to the Egg being considered by McCartney as a mere footnote in the band’s history, a long-awaited remastering is in the works. A post to the Steve Hoffman forums reads: “I thought this news deserves its own thread, so let’s discuss it here. On the Paul McCartney official fan Facebook group, a fan posted a photo with former Wings drummer Steve Holley at a recent gig, and asked about a Back To The Egg reissue.

“Steve said it’s coming next year, and MPL have been in touch to discuss it. So – let the discussion commence. Hopefully in 18 months from now or less, we’ll have it.” Discussion about the album’s possible 2027 release date has featured on the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit.

One fan wrote: “Huge if true, a BTTE set is all I’ve ever wanted, but I’ll hold my breath on it actually happening.” Another speculated: “London Town is coming too.”

It may come as a surprise to fans that Back to the Egg has not received a remaster, but McCartney once called the album a “disaster” of a project. He said: “The interesting thing is that, looking back on some of the work, some of the stuff, it’s better than you think it was, but because it got such harsh criticism … from me.

“The critics gave us a hard run, but I was particularly hard on us. I remember looking at a book, there was an album we did, I think it was Back to the Egg, which didn’t do well, and I remember thinking, ‘God, complete disaster.’

“Years later, I remember looking at it with Bowie in this old book — one of these who-did-what Hit Parade books, looking it up — and it was like No. 8 in America. And I thought, ‘Most people would give their right bloody arms to be No. 8,’. But eight, and I wasn’t satisfied, The Beatles had been No. 1. This is all right, keeps you going. But yes, a lot of the stuff is underrated, because of that.”
