Paul McCartney fans hope for ‘Naked’ album version of The Boys of Dungeon Lane

Fans of the legendary songwriter Paul McCartney hope his latest album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, receives a Naked version.

The Naked version of Let It Be has been hailed by listeners as the best way to experience The Beatles‘ last released album. McCartney would also offer up a similarly “reimagined” version of McCartney III, a solo album preceding The Boys of Dungeon Lane. Whether the 18th solo studio album from McCartney receives the same treatment is yet to be seen, but fans remain hopeful of the project coming together. Fans took to the r/PaulMcCartney subreddit and shared their hopes for a stripped-back version of the latest 14 songs from McCartney in the studio. A fan wrote: “The Boys of Dungeon Lane… Naked, when? Great album! Best of Paul’s in recent years, but the production feels a bit over the top. Odds on getting an alternative mix?”

Fans are unsure whether a Naked version of The Boys of Dungeon Lane will release. One person wrote: “While I do like the sound of the album, the demo of First Star of the Night is so great. Maybe even prefer that one. It has the home demo vibes from the Flaming Pie sessions.”

Another hopeful fan added: “I did find myself wishing Life Can Be Hard was stripped of the clarinet and fiddle. Here’s hoping!” A third added: “I would absolutely love a naked version of this album. It does feel slightly overproduced at times.”

Others were not so optimistic about the chances of The Boys of Dungeon Lane receiving a deconstructed version. One person wrote that the chances of such a version releasing are “about the same as getting a remix of any other non-classic album: zero.”

Another added: “Considering his only Naked album is the 50th anniversary of Band On The Run, I believe his best-selling album, I’d say the odds are very low any time soon. I could see his future estate doing it someday when he’s no longer with us, but even then, it could be years after he’s gone, and really, who knows what decisions they’d make for his music at that point.”

A third wrote: “Paul McCartney has put out the album the way he wants it to sound. We are not entitled to some other version if we don’t like it.”

Others fell into the middleground and believe that, while The Boys of Dungeon Lane will not receive a full-blown Naked version, there could be alternative song offerings on deluxe editions down the line. A fan suggested: “Personally, I think the production is pretty tasteful. Love the orchestral arrangements on the final run. I don’t think a full remix is likely, but I could see some alt mixes on a deluxe, maybe.
