Paul McCartney says one spot in Liverpool is a must-see when visiting Beatles’ legendary hometown

Paul McCartney says one location in Liverpool is a must-visit for those in the area.

The Beatles and Wings frontman often takes his friends there if it’s their first time in the area, with the Let It Be hitmaker sharing the location in a recent Q&A. Responding to a fan question in his You Gave Me the Answer column on his website, McCartney confirmed there were a handful of areas in the city which were must-see places. McCartney was asked: “We’ve heard that when friends visit Liverpool for the first time, you sometimes give them a personal tour? What are your must-see spots around the city?” McCartney confirmed a handful of spots on the sightseeing trip were Beatles-themed.

He said: “In Liverpool, Forthlin Road, the house I ended up in is always on the list. Then the Liverpool Institute, which is now LIPA. I show them the site of the first gig we ever played, called the Wilson Hall in Garston. And then I show them everything in between. Where John’s mum used to live, where John used to live, where George used to live, and where Ringo lived. I show them all the spots!”

McCartney’s reply comes just days after he confirmed a new album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, would be released later this year. The album took five years to make and the veteran songwriter says it’s based on a chord he hadn’t even been aware of when noodling around on the guitar.

He said: The making of the album took five years and, according to McCartney, it was stumbling on a chord even he had not heard that piqued his interest in new material. A press release confirming the upcoming release of The Boys of Dungeon Lane reads: “The Boys of Dungeon Lane was first brought into existence five years ago when Paul met producer Andrew Watt for a cup of tea and an exchange of ideas.

“While playing around on the guitar during the meeting, Paul happened upon a chord that even he – the world’s most successful living songwriter – didn’t recognise. Undeterred and driven by his experimental nature, Paul carried on changing one note, then another, until he had a three-chord sequence – which Watt suggested they should record.

“This session yielded the album’s opening track, As You Lie There. Encouraged by his new producer, Paul would flesh out the new track, playing the majority of instruments – much in the spirit of his 1970 solo debut album, McCartney. So began the journey of what became Paul’s eighteenth studio album credited solely to Paul McCartney.

“Paul’s packed schedule meant that the album was recorded in tight and efficient sessions between legs of global tour dates spanning five years and alternating between Los Angeles and Sussex. With no record label pressure and no deadline, the pair were able to make the album to their own timeline and satisfaction.

“Like his career, The Boys of Dungeon Lane is musically eclectic and sees Paul across an array of instruments and styles showcasing his broad musicality. There’s Wings style rock, Beatles style harmonies, McCartney style grooves, understated intimacy, melody-driven storytelling, character songs – the common thread being Paul.” A full tracklist for the album can be found below.
