The Beach Boys confirm 60th Anniversary Pet Sounds with alternate and mono versions to be released

The Beach Boys will celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of Pet Sounds with a re-release of the all-time great album.

The new version of the Brian Wilson-produced album will be available from May 15, with two formats of release expected. An audiophile vinyl, along with a digital box set, will be available a day before the Pet Sounds anniversary on May 16. The album received rave reviews on release though it took time for it to settle as one of the best of all time. The Beatles‘ Paul McCartney has cited God Only Knows as one of his favourite songs ever on several occasions.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 back in 2007, McCartney confirmed it was not just one of his favourite songs, but it reduced him to tears nearly every time he listened to it. The Beatles’ bassist was so moved by the song that he broke down when preparing to perform it with Wilson.

He told the radio station: “God Only Knows is one of the few songs that reduces me to tears every time I hear it. It’s really just a love song, but it’s brilliantly done. It shows the genius of Brian. I’ve actually performed it with him and I’m afraid to say that during the sound check I broke down.”

The Pet Sounds 60th Anniversary, which coincides with a tour of the Mike Love-fronted band in the United Kingdom, will see a complete remastering of demos, outtakes, and alternative tracks from the vault. A full tracklist can be found below.
