Brian Wilson’s playful cover of Monster Mash hailed by fans as ‘amazing’ on-stage moment

An “amazing” on-stage moment from The Beach BoysBrian Wilson has delighted fans, with his cover of Monster Mash quite the surprise.

An appearance in The Bergen Performing Arts Centre in Englewood, New Jersey, had Wilson seemingly stoked to perform a song that wasn’t his own. Covering Bobby “Boris” Pickett & The Crypt Kickers is quite the choice for the Pet Sounds mastermind, though he seemed rather thrilled with the performance. An upload of the performance to YouTube has thrilled viewers, who left compliments praising Wilson for the surprise cover. One person wrote: “It’s amazing to see Brian conduct the band like this. He’s still got it.” Another added: “This is so cool to watch and hear. The boss teaching his students… thanks for sharing.”

A third added: “Man he is way more pumped to do this song than like any of his own. Brian is a character I swear.” Wilson would tour occasionally as a solo artist, decades after he was removed from The Beach Boys. The band found themselves at the “ultimate crossroads” when they made the tough choice to remove Wilson from the band.

With the release of their M.I.U. Album, the band found themselves falling out of favour with the public, not even cracking the top 150. Their follow-ups fared no better, and it was ultimately decided to remove Brian Wilson from his role in the group.

Speaking of this “important and difficult” time for the band, Carl Wilson said: “he last two years have been the most important and difficult time of our career. We were at the ultimate crossroads. We had to decide whether what we had been involved in since we were teenagers had lost its meaning. We asked ourselves and each other the difficult questions we’d often avoided in the past.”

Brian Wilson would officially be sacked in the office of the band’s lawyer, where he was handed a letter confirming he had been dismissed by the band.

The letter, in part, reads: “This is to advise you that your services as an employee of Brother Records Inc. and otherwise are hereby terminated, effective immediately. This action is taken in your best interest and is not reversible. We wish you the best of health.”

Part of the reason to remove Wilson from the group had been made due to Dr. Landy’s increasing involvement with the God Only Knows songwriter, with many in the band believing it was tough love that would help above all else.

Wilson would reflect on his rivalry with The Beatles, too, suggesting the back-and-forth was a thrill. He said: “I was so jealous. I was jealous of The Beatles. I couldn’t believe how jealous I was of The Beatles. I couldn’t believe it, I was so jealous.”

Wilson was later asked if after every single he felt more jealous, but played down the later works from the Fab Four. He added: “Nah, actually we got rolling a bit on our own thing too so it was pretty cool.”
