Fans are spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing their favourite Blonde on Blonde track, but they appear to have reached a consensus.
Bob Dylan fans shared their thoughts on the classic 1966 album in a post to the r/BobDylan subreddit. There, members of the public and frequent listeners decided on what was the strongest piece from the album. Dylan once called Blonde on Blonde the album that got “closest I ever got to the sound I hear in my mind.” It’s a sentiment fans appear to agree with as their selection for the best song on the record is the “most Dylan-y sounding Dylan song” on the album. The post to the forum had fans discuss more than a few classic pieces from the album, including Visions of Johanna and I Want You. A fan of the album asked: “What’s everyone’s favourite Dylan song from Blonde on Blonde?”
The top-rated comment in the thread was a suggestion for Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again. Many fans seemed to agree, with one replying: “I nominate this song as the most Dylan-y sounding Dylan song I could recommend to someone who wanted a Dylan song that sounds the most Dylan-y.”
Another added: “That’s a great point. I think the modern impersonation of Dylan’s voice probably came mostly from Blonde on Blonde, especially Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again.” A third shared: “Greatest song ever made, so yeah, this is probably the one.”
Other suggestions were made by those in the comments, though none struck a chord quite like Stuck Inside of Mobile with the Memphis Blues Again did. One person did suggest their favourite song of all time was found on Blonde on Blonde. They wrote: “My favourite song off that album is also my favourite song of all time. One of Us Must Know (Sooner or Later).”
Another replied: “This is a fantastic song. So much energy.” A third added: “Mine too. It’s so poignant. I didn’t mean, I didn’t know, I couldn’t see. But I really did try to get close to you. I feel like it’s his side of the Baez breakup thing. Everyone says, ‘oh he was such a (expletive) to her’, and maybe he was. But there are two sides to every breakup.”
Others believed the album’s closing song, Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands, is the very best of Blonde on Blonde. One fan wrote: “Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands is a great one.” Another added: “That song grabbed me like no other on that superb LP. Magical and mesmerising.”
A third shared: “It’s not one that I would list in my top ten, I don’t think, but every time it comes on, I can’t help but think, ‘Wow this is a masterpiece.'” Other songs mentioned by fans included Just Like a Woman and Temporary Like Achilles. Whatever the selection, Blonde on Blonde
