Pink Floyd fans wonder what release is next after ‘surprisingly good’ archive releases from Sony

A series of “surprisingly good” releases from Sony has satisfied Pink Floyd fans, who are wondering what could come next.

Fans are speculating on what could be the next in a series of remasters and re-releases from the band’s discography. Their entire back catalogue was sold to Sony for around $400million last year. The release of Pink Floyd: Live at Pompeii was hailed by fans as an excellent and faithful release of the iconic gig. But now attention from listeners has turned to the next project, with many hoping for a live album release of The Wall or more pieces from the band’s album, Animals. While nothing has been confirmed yet, fans are speculating on what could be set for release next. A post to the r/PinkFloyd subreddit saw fans share their hopes, though fans of The Wall may be disappointed.

A fan asked: “Any rumours on a next Sony release after Pompeii? Pink Floyd at Pompeii was a surprisingly good first release now that Sony has their catalogue. It seemed like it was well-received and even made the charts in a few places. I thought it was packaged great and the sound was superb.

“Is there any news or rumours on what Sony might do next? They paid a lot of money for Pink Floyd, I can’t imagine they’re going to wait too long to have their next release.” Fans agree there is not long to wait until another project is announced, though are unsure of what to expect. One fan who wanted to hear The Wall in all its live glory from 1980 has just a “slim” chance of this happening.

Another fan explained: “If I remember correctly, everything that’s related to The Wall is still owned by Roger Waters. And Roger apparently doesn’t like both the concert-film and the actual The Wall movie. So chances of a re-realise of both are pretty slim.” A third wrote: “I don’t think it is anymore. I imagine that was part of the Sony deal too.”

Pink Floyd’s music royalties were recorded under two companies, Pink Floyd (1987) Limited and Pink Floyd Music Limited. The former company was established to collect royalties following Waters’ departure from the group. Guitarist David Gilmour confirmed he was open to selling the back catalogue, though not because of the finances.

He said: “I am not interested in that from a financial standpoint. I’m only interested in it from getting out of the mud bath that it has been for quite a while.” Other fans believe a re-release or extended cut of Animals could be in the works ahead of its fiftieth anniversary in 1977.

One fan speculated: “Supposedly every show was recorded on tape, but those recordings are locked away in a vault somewhere.” Even then, the band are not known for their frequent anniversary celebrations. A disappointed fan shared: “I thought for sure there would be something for the Wish You Were Here fiftieth anniversary, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen.”

Another fan shared: “It’s likely to be Pulse remixed in Atmos by Alan Parsons.” Some listeners believe the album is well overdue a remastering as it has not been remixed since the original version. A fan wrote: “Pulse hasn’t been remixed since the original version, even remastered (only lightly) due to the rights from James Guthrie.

“The best sound source is still the DVD/BD The sound/mix of A Great Day For Freedom and Lost For Words on the rehearsals is miles better than any version of Pulse. If they ever get Pulse to that sound quality, I would be a kid on Christmas.” Whether Pulse, the live album released in 1995, receives a remastering, is yet to be seen.
