What Bob Dylan played during ‘sensational’ Outlaw Music Festival show in Charlotte

Fans of the legendary musician Bob Dylan are saying his show in Charlotte, North Carolina, was a “sensational” performance.

The gig comes hot off the heels of a date in Alpharetta, where Dylan reintroduced both Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35 and Positively 4th Street to his setlist. Attendees were thrilled by the additions to the set, which have since remained for the follow-up show on July 26. A post to the r/BobDylan subreddit had fans celebrating the inclusion of two classic tracks which, in recent years, have become rarities for Dylan on stage. His show in Charlotte marks the sixth time Dylan has performed Positively 4th Street in sixteen years, while Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35 remains almost as infrequent on stage.

Fans flocked to the subreddit to share their thoughts on the show, where an in-form Dylan even spoke to the crowd a handful of times. Dylan is notorious for his lack of chattiness with the crowd in recent years, which made the show in Charlotte quite the surprise. A full setlist can be found below.

  • Gotta Serve Somebody
  • I Can Tell (Bo Diddley cover)
  • Forgetful Heart
  • Axe and the Wind (George Butler cover)
  • To Ramona
  • Early Roman Kings
  • Under the Red Sky
  • I’ll Make It All Up To You (Charlie Rich cover)
  • All Along the Watchtower
  • ‘Til I Fell in Love With You
  • Desolation Row
  • Love Sick
  • Share Your Love With Me (Bobby Bland cover)
  • Blind Willie McTell
  • Positively 4th Street
  • Rainy Day Woman #12 & 35
  • Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right

A post to the r/BobDylan subreddit reads: “Amazing performance by Bob tonight. He was sounding great along with the other guys; he even spoke to the crowd a few times! Commenting on how hot it is and introducing the band. Second time seeing him, and this was way better than last year. I believe we’re seeing a fourth peak in this man.”

Another user agreed and dubbed the show “sensational”. They shared: “This was a sensational show. The band was on fire, and his voice was as good as he’s sounded in years. It’s fun to watch stuff I’ll tell my grandkids about.

“I’ll say that if the bootleg folk were looking for a new volume, I’d listen the shit out of a bootleg series of this live era of Bob.” It comes as Dylan has reintroduced some of his all-time greats to the setlist.

It is not the first song surprise from Dylan on this Outlaw Music Festival tour, with the veteran performer introducing The Times They Are A-Changin’ to his setlist for the first time in fifteen years.

Dylan played the song just once in 2010, at a performance held at the White House. The last public performance of the song was given in Chukchansi Park, Fresno, in August 2009. Mr. Tambourine Man has also featured in the Outlaw Music Festival setlist, making it the first time in fifteen years that Dylan has performed the song live.
