Veteran rocker and headliner for this year’s Glastonbury Festival, Neil Young, has invited President Donald Trump to a Love Earth show.
The Heart of Gold songwriter will release Talkin’ to the Trees next week and will tour Europe and the United States in support of the album. Though Young has made his stance against the current president clear, it appears the Rockin’ in the Free World performer is offering the 47th President of the United States an olive branch… on one condition. In a post to his website on Monday, Young confirmed he would be inviting the president to any of the shows on his tour dates in the US later this year. A post to the Neil Young Archives confirmed the open invitation. It is yet to be seen whether Trump will accept, though it remains unlikely.
Young wrote: “Our country and our way of life, that which our fathers and theirs fought for, is now threatened by our government. This is not what we voted for. This is our new reality. Our government is out of control, not standing for us. You can stand up for American values this summer, for our children and theirs.
“When I tour the USA this summer, if there is not martial law by then which would make it impossible, let’s all come together and stand for American values. We will not be doing a political show. We will be playing the music we love for all of us to enjoy together. President Trump, you’re invited. Come and hear our music just as you did for decades.
“Many other great musicians will be in our country this summer, there for you, playing your favourite music. We are proud to be who we are, and must never let our government forget it. Thanks, Neil.”
It appears the condition for Trump’s attendance is the US cannot be under “martial law” by the time Young heads back to the US. He will play gigs in Ireland, England, and Sweden before then.
Young also offered his support for Bruce Springsteen, with the rock legend also hitting out at Trump during a gig in Manchester. In a previous post to the Neil Young Archives, Young wrote: “What are you worryin’ about man? Bruce and thousands of musicians think you are ruining America. You worry about that instead of the dyin’ kids in Gaza. That’s your problem. I am not scared of you. Neither are the rest of us.
“You shut down FEMA when we needed it most. That’s your problem Trump. STOP THINKING ABOUT WHAT ROCKERS ARE SAYING. Think about saving America from the mess you made. Taylor Swift is right. So is Bruce. You know how I feel. You are more worried about yourself than AMERICA. Wake up Trump!!” Young signed his message with “Neil Young and many others”.
