The Beatles fans defend Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band film as classic ‘guilty pleasure’

Fans of an ill-forgotten film based on The BeatlesSgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band album are defending the movie as a “guilty pleasure”.

The film, which shares its name with the iconic album from the Fab Four, released in 1978 and features The Bee Gees, Peter Frampton, and comedy legend Steve Martin. Cameo appearances from Alice Cooper, Aerosmith, and Earth, Wind and Fire can also be spotted throughout the movie. The film fared poorly with critics on release, though it turned a minor profit. It has since become a cult classic, with the music jukebox adaptation of the 1974 Broadway production still loved by some. A post to the r/Beatles subreddit saw fans praise the film, with one user saying they “really don’t get the hate.”

They wrote: “I rewatched it recently, and I really don’t get the hate. Sure, The Beatles don’t sing in it, but that shouldn’t be held against it, what with the popularity of movies like Yesterday, and Across the Universe. I think most of the cast did pretty fine with what they were given, a highlight being purely how they and the producers interpreted a lot of the songs.

“Of course, you have the conventional stuff like Aerosmith’s cover of Come Together, but I’m also partial to covers such as Bee Gees – A Day In The Life, as well as Billy Preston – Get Back, and Alice Cooper & Bee Gees – Because.

“In fact, a lot of the tracks on the soundtrack are quite good covers, if you simply accept them for what they are, rather than trying to compare them to the Beatles originals. They’re very good alternate takes, if you will.”

Those who watched the film on its release are now sharing fond memories of the Bee Gees-starring feature, which appears to hold a spot in the hearts of many fans. One wrote: “Hey, you’ve got my support. I was nine when the movie came out, I hadn’t discovered The Beatles yet, and I loved it because of the music even before I knew The Beatles. Oh Darling, Got To Get You Into My Life and Come Together, even more than forty years later, I’ll for sure listen to.”

Another added: “It’s a sort of feel-good go-to for me, mostly for nostalgic feelings, and a few of the performances, like Aerosmith and Earth, Wind and Fire. It’s fun if you throw away any expectations. I always found it kind of funny that they pulled more from Abbey Road than Sgt Pepper’s for source material.”

A third wrote: “It’s a guilty pleasure. The plot is ridiculous and nonsensical, not to mention it’s hard to buy its sincerity knowing it’s a Hollywood film and, for lack of better phrasing, nothing is real.”

Some users have even said it was how they first got into The Beatles. They wrote: “This movie is how I got into The Beatles in the first place. I was nine years old in 1977 and, like everyone, I was obsessed with Saturday Night Fever.

“So of course we went to see Sgt. Pepper‘s Lonely Hearts Club Band and I loved the music even more. I asked for The White Album for the next Christmas and that started a Beatles obsession for me that hasn’t ended. I still love the Bee Gees and I know the movie is silly, but I still love it.”
