School’s Out songwriter and rock legend Alice Cooper has recalled the wild time he hosted The Who’s Keith Moon “for a week”.
Cooper, who will head on tour in the UK later this year, says “everything” you’ve heard about Keith Moon is “true” and shared a story of how the drummer behaved when at the Poison songwriter’s home. Moon, who toured with The Who until his death in 1978, has been noted for his wild behaviour while on tour and boredom when not performing. The legendary drummer kept good company in fellow drummer and The Beatles legend, Ringo Starr, as well as Vivian Stanshall and Larry Smith of the Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band. But his time at Cooper’s home has gone down as legend, with the rock legend humouring Moon’s wild week.
Cooper said: “He used to come over to the house, and my wife and I had just married, she had no idea who he was. And he stayed for a week. And we would leave and come back, and we left one time, came back, and he was dressed in a full French maid’s outfit.
“And he was like, ‘Hello, how you doing? I have done all the dusting in the house,’ and my wife’s going ‘who is he?’. And I said ‘he’s the best drummer in the world, just go with it.” To her credit, Cooper’s wife did go along with it.
He added: “And she says ‘okay, I’ve got to go.’ She starts driving down, she’s halfway down Benedict Canyon in the car, and all of a sudden, she sees these hands. He’s on top of the car, and he goes ‘hi Cheryl’.”
The wild story comes as Cooper confirms his only dates in the UK for later this year.
Cooper said: “Cardiff and Edinburgh – you can’t escape! We missed you last year, but now we’re coming back. Alice would never let you down. Can’t wait to see all the Sick Things at our shows at Utilita Arena in Cardiff on July 22 and the Edinburgh Playhouse on July 23.”
Fresh from the success of his latest album Road, a concept album about the thrills and spills of touring, Cooper is back, accompanied as always by his long-running live band of Ryan Roxie (guitar), Chuck Garric (bass), Tommy Henrikson (guitar), Glen Sobel (drums), and Nita Strauss (guitar).
He said: “For Road, I wanted the band to be involved in the foundation of all the songs. I only see these guys when we’re on the road. So, I wanted them to be as tight as they are for the show but on all new material. When you have a band this good, I believe in showing it off, and this is my way of doing so.”
