Fans have suggested the best song on the White Album from The Beatles is also its most overplayed.
The Fab Four’s 1968 release, which features songs like Dear Prudence, Back in the U.S.S.R., and Honey Pie, is considered one of the best albums in music history. But those sharing their favourite songs from the album said its best song is its most overplayed. A post to the r/Beatles subreddit saw one user ask: “What is your favourite song from the White Album? Mine is Don’t Pass Me By.” Though other comments may have selected the more obvious tracks as their favourites, one piece from George Harrison is considered a classic that is far too overplayed.
One user who suggested While My Guitar Gently Weeps was met with a mixed reaction. The original poster replied: “I like it, and love it, but it is overused so much to where it is starting to get dry.” Another added: “While I weep because While My Guitar Gently Weeps has been played for the 10 millionth time.”
A third explained: “It’s just used A LOT, just like Here Comes the Sun, it is played a TON and it is almost like my ears can’t catch a break. Who knows, maybe it is just my ears that are having this problem.”
Some agreed it was a song which was relied on too often, suggesting other tracks from the White Album instead. One user wrote: “It’s a close race between several for me, but I think I have to give a slight edge to Dear Prudence.” Another agreed, adding: “I would choose this one too.”
There were some less-than obvious choices made, too. One user suggested Martha My Dear was the best of the tracks on the White Album, and it’s all thanks to McCartney. A user wrote: “There really is something for everyone on this album. It’s a close call but mine’s gotta be Martha My Dear. I’m a sucker for Paul on the piano.”
Another user agreed, adding: “Martha My Dear, I don’t know, I just like how it changes from a ragtime to an upbeat orchestral song.” Less popular songs from the album made the rounds later in the thread too, with one fan suggesting Mother Nature’s Son as one of the best songs from the White Album.
They wrote: “So, this is my favorite Beatles album, and my second favorite album of all time. Picking a single favorite song from it is gonna be tough, but I think I can narrow down to either Mother Nature’s Son or Happiness is a Warm Gun.”
Some have praised the White Album for being so varied it is near impossible to select a favourite track. They wrote: “The sheer variety is what makes the White Album so astonishing and timeless, so it’s impossible to choose one track, but I’ve always had a soft spot for ‘Glass Onion’.”
