Neil Young has cancelled a free show in Ukraine due to “the changing situation on the ground”.
Though the Glastonbury headliner had hoped to play a free show in Ukraine, he has since cancelled the concert due to the dangers of taking his crew to the venue. Young has since apologised to fans who were hoping to see him at the show in a post to the Neil Young Archives. He wrote: “Our concert in Ukraine is cancelled. We had a good venue, close to a shelter, but the changing situation on the ground was too much. I could not in good conscience take my crew and instruments into that area.
“My apologies to all. Ukraine is a great country with a good leader. Slava Ukraini.” Young’s tour will instead stop off at venues around Europe and North America, including the legendary Glastonbury Festival. Young will also be joined by Van Morrison at a gig in Dublin’s Malahide Castle.
Those wanting to deep dive Young’s discography ahead of his headline performance on the Pyramid Stage are in luck as fans of the Rockin’ in the Free World songwriter’s music had plenty of suggestions.
One user who took to the r/NeiYoung subreddit asked: “Neil Young deep dive advice? I’ve been a fan of Neil Young for a fairly long time, ever since I saw him as a teen at Glastonbury 2009 – he even inspired me to go out and buy a harmonica and holder! However, I never dug much deeper than his big albums and greatest hits.
“I was just too intimidated by the sheer volume of it all! And typically any artist with a career that long is gonna have a few rough patches!”
Plenty of suggestions filtered through, with one user replying: “Every single album from the 70s is essential. Besides Journey from the Past, maybe. But that’s arguably not an album. And that era seems to be where he consistently draws from for a majority of his setlists.”
It comes as the Harvest and Tonight’s the Night songwriter shared an update to his website, the Neil Young Archives, and confirmed the as-yet-titled album has been finished, with lead single Big Change out now.
Young wrote the material for his newest album in November and December and appears to have recorded it last month. It is now being mastered and printed on vinyl and CD.
He wrote: “Hi everyone. I just finished my new album with Lou Adler and John Hanlon. It is in mastering now to make the vinyl, CD and digital copies. I am very happy and relived to have this done in the short time it took.
“The album art has been completed and handed in with Jenice Heo. I am working on the lyric sheet now, hoping to hand-write the words and get them in, in time…
“It is a happy feeling I have today, knowing I have made an album I think people will enjoy. I hope it’s out in April. That would be pretty fast. Playing with the Chrome Hearts was a joy as we recorded song after song at Shangrila in Malibu.
“I wrote these songs in November and December. They feel fresh to me and I am very happy to have this all ready for you. It won’t be long now and it will be great to have new songs to play on the road this summer in Europe, the UA and Canada. We are looking forward to that!”
