Pink Floyd fans ‘hyped’ for release of Pompeii live show on vinyl as fans say they can bin their bootleg copy

Excitement for the release of Pink Floyd‘s Pompeii vinyl is growing as fans say they are “hyped” for the release.

The legendary performance which saw David Gilmour, Roger Waters, and the rest of Pink Floyd perform in Italy will be remastered and released in June this year for the first time. Bootleg copies have circulated since the performance first aired in 1972, but an official release has long been wanted by fans. A post to r/PinkFloyd saw fans share their excitement for the release. One fan shared a screenshot of the bonus tracks release of the double LP, as well as an extended version of Saucerful of Secrets on the CD copy. They wrote: “We’re getting a vinyl release of Pompeii!”

Fans are blown away by the care going into the project, with one pointing out the original film negatives were restored to 4K quality. They wrote: “Wow they found the original film negatives and were able to restore it in 4k and it will also be in IMAX theatres April 24, the audio has been remixed by Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree. This is going to be awesome.”

Another praised the proposed 4K IMAX release, writing: “Bloody hell, this is the best news I have heard all damn year. The re-release and the album were good enough, but 4K IMAX? This is BEYOND what I expected.” Other fans have said they are already “saving up now for the CDs, LPs and DVD” to be released later this year.

Dedicated Pink Floyd fans may already own a copy of the Pompeii performance, as a bootlegged version has been in circulation for decades. Some say they are all but ready to throw out their bootlegged copies and switch to the official release from Pink Floyd. One wrote: “My vinyl bootleg can finally be put to rest.”

Another added: “Its duty has been fulfilled.” Another user says they are “hyped” for the release, which is set to feature bonus tracks and, according to another fan, will adapt the theatrical release, rather than the controversial director’s cut. One wrote: “Soundtrack has some bonus tracks too. I’m hyped.”

Another asked: “Will they be removing the unnecessary footage of spacecraft that was added to the ‘Director’s Cut’ DVD in place of some of the original footage?” A third user replied, suggesting it is the film without “bizarre CGI shots” being remastered. They wrote: “It’s the same cut as the 1974 theatrical rerelease, so it won’t have any of the bizarre CGI shots included in the Director’s Cut.”

The user complaining about the spacecraft footage explained the differences further, adding: “If I remember correctly, the studio footage was added a few years after the original theatrical release and then included on home VHS versions, then the Director’s Cut included additional studio footage that hadn’t previously been used (I remember because Rick never got interviewed in previous releases) but also added on all the crappy spacecraft and planets footage. It’d be nice to get a version with all the studio interviews but none of the unnecessary space stuff.”

  1. I must be the only one probably but I prefer the original bootleg audio compared to the remastered version – based on the YouTube clip I saw.
