Neil Young announces Coastal live album and drops first single from 2023 solo tour

A new live album and documentary film featuring Neil Young, Coastal, is set to release on April 18.

The legendary songwriter, set to headline Glastonbury Festival and BST Hyde Park later this summer, earlier today confirmed the release of Coastal. Lead single Vampire Blues released alongside the announcement, with pre-orders now open for the album. Fans were full of praise for the single, already calling it a “great version” of the On the Beach track. A description for the record from Rough Trade’s listing can be found below, confirming the album would feature eleven songs ripped from the soundtrack to a tour film of the same name.

It reads: “Neil Young and Reprise Records release Coastal: The Soundtrack, featuring 11 live recordings from the tour film of the same name. Coastal is a personal, behind-the-scenes documentary on Neil Young as he cruises the coast on his 2023 solo US tour. The film gives an intimate view of the maverick musician, as he navigates a return to the stage post-Covid.

“From his everyday observations on the bus to his candid banter with his audience. Coastal is a rare peek behind the curtain of this unguarded iconoclast. The film was shot and directed by Daryl Hannah.” A tracklist for Coastal, which releases April 18, can be found below.

1. I’m the Ocean
2. Comes a Time
3. Love Earth
4. Prime of Life
5. Throw Your Hatred Down
6. Vampire Blues
7. When I Hold You in My Arms
8. Expecting to Fly
9. Song X
10. I Am a Child
11. Don’t Forget Love

Fans sound excited for the album and were surprised by the sudden release of the song earlier today. It comes just weeks after the release of Young’s new single, Big Change, as well as the announcement of a new album which is close to finished. Young will also release archive album Oceanside Countryside later this year.

One fan wrote of the live version of Vampire Blues: “Great version of Vampire Blues. But, with Before + After out there already, I’d prefer he and his team focus on the Official Release Series represses of his 90s albums or the Live at Vicar Greendale Acoustic he teased in the fall!”

Another added: “Yeah 100%. I’d love an album dedicated to outtakes from the 70s, I get that kinda already exists but you know. I feel like an official release of a Stills-Young tour show would be great, or more outtakes from the Human Highway sessions.”

A third wrote: “I was surprised by how well it sounded to be honest. Good performance but dude there’s soooo many other projects I believe he should be working towards instead.”

You can listen to Vampire Blues from the upcoming Coastal album below.
