Metallica fans say Mission: Impossible 2 song is ‘proof St. Anger’ could have been better

Fans of Metallica are saying a song used on the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack is “proof” their St. Anger album could have been better.

A discussion from fans over the song I Disappear, which featured in the Tom Cruise-starring film, saw some suggest Metallica’s St. Anger could have been much improved. Some fans suggested the song was a chance to hear the direction they would take on the album, while others said the Mission: Impossible 2 soundtrack addition was far better than anything heard on their 2003 album. One fan wrote: “I enjoy it! It is proof that with good production St. Anger could have been much better.” What changing the production entails for the song was discussed by users, who say the mix is “definitely missing something”.

One user wrote: “They replaced every drum hit with a drum sample, similar to what Megadeth did with the 2004 remixes. The original snare is the only original element of the drums left there just a lot lowered in the mix and mixed with a sampled snare. Notice how every other element of the drums sound different, especially the cymbals.” Another suggested the songwriting was St. Anger’s real issue.

They wrote: “Song writing sucks mostly on St. Anger. Death magnetic has worse production.” A third user agreed, adding: “It’s better than anything on St. Anger.” Despite the lukewarm reaction to St. Anger, other users have said they remember I Disappear fondly.

One recalled: “I Disappear was what got me into Metallica. The groove is so tasty on this track. And of course, then I went through the classic albums and really fell in hard for Metallica but it all started in eighth grade when I heard this song.” Another says they drove an hour to pick up a burned CD edition of the song from a radio station.

They wrote: “When this song came out, calling requests in to the radio station was still a thing. The local station had just gotten an awesome DJ from another station that had just switched formats and fired everybody.

“One night, I called up and the DJ answered super quick. It was a slow call night so we chatted about Metallica for a bit. He offered to burn I Disappear on a cd for me so I wouldn’t have to request it. I drove an hour to the station to pick it up. I listened to it on repeat all the way home. It was ok.”

A third has suggested if Metallica had released an album around the time I Disappear released, then the album would have fared well. They claimed: “Excellent song. If Metallica had released an album in 2001-2002, it probably would’ve sounded similar to I Disappear.”

Another added: “Some days, it’s my favourite non-studio album favourite, other days it’s No Leaf Clover, but it would definitely be one of my 10-15 favourite songs.”
