Oasis member Noel Gallagher has angered System of a Down fans with his thoughts on the band.
The songwriter behind Don’t Look Back in Anger and Live Forever dubbed the Serj Tankian band the “shittest” of “all time,” much to the annoyance of r/SystemofaDown members. A post of Gallagher’s comments on the band was shared to the subreddit, where members in turn called Oasis one of the worst bands around. Gallagher said: “Do you ever look at the sky and think, ‘I’m glad I’m alive?’ After I heard System of a Down, I thought, I’m actually alive to hear the shittest band of all time. Which is quite something when you think about it.
“Of all the bands that have gone before and all the bands that’ll be in the future, I was around when the worst one was around.” Gallagher’s comments proved a smidge ironic to fans of System of a Down, as they pointed out he was a member of Oasis. One wrote: “The fact someone from oasis is saying this makes it even funnier.”
Another wrote: “Oasis is one of the worst bands ever. Absolutely no talent.” A third unfavourably compared Oasis to Greta Van Fleet, highlighting their open love and influence from bands of the 1960s. One user wrote: “Oasis has some good songs but at their absolute best they were to The Beatles what Greta Van Fleet is to Led Zeppelin. No one sounds like System of a Down, that’s why they have such a long-lasting legacy.”
A second added: “I would argue they’re the most OVERRATED band ever. They’re decent, good, catchy songwriters. That’s it. Nothing new or special or mind-blowing. Yet somehow a bunch of people think they’re legends and music media still talks about them every day, thirty years after a couple of hit songs. The definition of overrated.”
But some disagreed with the assessment of Oasis as talentless, and found some solace in listening to both the Gallagher brothers and System of a Down. One user wrote: “Noel’s always been a prick but there’s no way you can listen to (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and say they are talentless. If you can, I don’t envy your musical ear. I love System of a Down, both bands are talented, just on completely different spectrums of rock.”
Other users found Gallagher’s lacklustre taste in music a tad startling. One wrote: “It’s incredible to me that someone who’s so entwined with music can’t bear to digest anything that isn’t The Jam or The Beatles. But honestly, you can hear that in his own music; sticks to boring retreads of the same ideas he had thirty years ago. The Gallaghers, in my opinion, have always been one of rock’s most successful cosplayers.”
It comes as Gallagher previously revealed his hate for The Beach Boys, once calling them a “barbershop quartet” of musicians and “fucking rubbish.”
