Oasis fans have called Wonderwall one of the “greatest songs ever,” though not everyone is convinced it is their best.
A post to the r/Oasis subreddit has seen the community of avid Oasis listeners consider where Wonderwall ranks in the discographies of Liam and Noel Gallagher. Some consider it a defining moment from What’s the Story, Morning Glory? though others are less than impressed with the single and say it is far too overplayed. A fan asked: “Yes Wonderwall isn’t Oasis’ best song, and some say it’s overplayed, but I still love this tune and I’m happy anytime I hear it on the radio.
“It also helped Oasis become the biggest band in the world so I have nothing but love for Wonderwall. Do you like this song?” Fans were split on their love and hate for the song, which is one of the group’s best-known songs. One user summarised their thoughts on the song and said it is a “decade defining” song despite it being overplayed. They wrote: “Sure, it’s not my favourite anymore, far from it, it’s overplayed and a bit of a meme, but.
“It was the first Oasis song I had ever heard, and it blew me the fuck away and they instantly became my favourite band when I was a small child, and it’s a decade defining song, anybody who’s anybody who lived through the 90s knows this.” Another user has since pushed further and called it “one of the greatest songs ever”.
They claimed: “It may be overplayed but there is a reason for that. It’s one of the greatest songs ever. Wonderwall can be played to absolutely any audience and everyone will sing along. I honestly believe that the meme actually holds a lot of truth to it.
“Most people do want to hear and play Wonderwall and that’s why the ‘here’s Wonderwall‘ meme has hung around for so long. I’m not sure that the same meme would still be hanging around if it was a different song.” Another user has suggested the song has lost its magic through the “uncomplicated melody” and overplayed experience.

They wrote: “I barely ever listen to Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger. They were just too ubiquitous growing up and kind of lost their magic for me after hearing them for the 500th time, knowing every nuance of every note and beat. Champagne Supernova, Live Forever, Some Might Say are similar to a lesser degree, I don’t listen to them as much as you’d think for how much I like them.
“But, Wonderwall came on in shuffle when driving the other week and I left it on. And after hearing it again played loud and for the duration for probably the first time in years, I was like ‘…It really is a fucking great song.’ I was just reminded of how good it was, the beautifully uncomplicated melody, when the cello line on the mellotron and the drums kick in, Liam’s voice is great, the drums to kick back into the verse, the little piano outro, and the typically simple but emotional lyrics from Noel.
“Noel always said that nobody in Oasis was the best in the world at anything, but when it all came together it was something special. I think Wonderwall is the epitome of that sentiment.”
