Electric Light Orchestra fans decide on the best ‘three track run’ of any album in Jeff Lynne’s discography

Electric Light Orchestra fans have decided on the band’s best “three-track run” from any album in Jeff Lynne’s discography.

There are plenty of contenders for the best run of three songs in the legendary producer’s discography, but fans took to an “amazing run” which has gone overlooked by listeners. A fan writing to the r/ELO subreddit asked: “What’s the best run of three songs in an ELO album? For me it’s a pretty obvious one and I think Tightrope, Telephone Line, Rockaria.” While many users agreed with the sensational triple bill of A New World Record tracks, others suggested some later albums by the band as having a better three-track run.

One user wrote: “Twilight, Yours Truly, 2095, Ticket to the Moon.” Their suggestion was well received by other users who suggested The Way Life’s Meant to Be, the track that follows Ticket to the Moon, could also be part of the best three-track run if Twilight were removed. Another wrote: “This. What an amazing run.” Another added: “Absolutely right, followed only by Here is the News, 21st Century Man, and Hold on Tight as the perfect opening arc and closing arc of the Time album’s story.”

Other users agreed with the original poster and the only contender would be a four-track run on Out of the Blue, disqualified because it did not fit the three-track rule. One wrote: “I think I’d have to agree with you there. I know some people are probably gonna say Concerto for a Rainy Day but to properly enjoy that you need to hear all four songs, not just three of them.”

Another user disagreed, writing: “How many bands have a great song or two on a given album side, but with ELO we are debating which are the best THREE IN A ROW and trying to disqualify Concerto for a Rainy Day because it’s four in a row!!!” The original poster has since confirmed if it were a four-track run in discussion, their choice would be Concerto for a Rainy Day.

Concerto for a Rainy Day consists of Standin’ in the Rain, Big Wheels, Summer and Lightning, and Mr. Blue Sky. Another user suggested Face the Music, writing: “I can’t say Concerto For a Rainy Day because that’s four, so I’ll go for Fire on High, Waterfall, Evil Woman.”

One headed a bit further back into ELO’s discography and suggested Eldorado had one of the band’s best three-track runs. They wrote: “This such a tough call and any of these suggestions could be considered the best of the best three song runs. But, I am surprised the opening salvo from Eldorado has not been brought up, Eldorado Overture, Can’t Get It Out of My Head, Boy Blue.”

Another Eldorado fan suggested: “It’s a tough one but Poorboy, Mister Kingdom, and Nobody’s Child is a really great run.”

  1. My choice, Concerto For A Rainy Day. I love playing these 4 when it’s raining. Open the windows. Hear the rain and the music! The bigger the storm, the louder I turn it up.

  2. I’m a true blue fan. Since I was 14 my dad bought me the Out of the Blue album. Over the years I bought just about every album that came out. I didn’t expect anyone to say the Time record. I like so many songs on this one. I even got to go to the tour concert. Had an amazing time.
